Bionicle MOC - Byorak 3.3 by Alex-Darkrai Bionicle MOC - Byorak 3.3 by Alex-Darkrai
It has been a long time since I have uploaded something related to Byorak!
I got myself some new white background material to take better pictures which are also worth improving with photoshop. Of course Byorak had to be the first MOC to test the background, because he's the biggest one of my MOCs and is thus able to test the limits of the background the best.
I also never took an actual action shot of him, although he's quite posable.

Creators Note:

As the title hints, this is only an update of the normal Byorak. I didn't recreate him entirely new. I realized that the Ehlek parts weren't fit to be placed where they had been, after many people pointed it out. I also reworked the upper legs completely, because they were too gappy and misshaped, in my opinion. I also fixed some flaws within the color distribution of the legs and added some details.
I also added some details to the head, made the eyes bright green and bigger in order to fit the size of his head better. The back had also shape flaws, which I fixed up.
A fun fact about this MOC is that I used all the shields of the Bohrok-Kal series on his body armor now! They're scattered on his body like trophies.
The sword in the picture is an elongated version of Sonic Striker which I haven't uploaded yet. Nothing special, but in case you wich to see more of it, just write it in the comments.

The Creation:

Byorak, the blacksmith.
His true origins are unknown, but his homeland probably has once been the island of Stelt, because he's of the same race as Sidorak.
Byorak is part of the Dark Hunters. He rarely takes on any jobs and only if he's interested in the prey he could hunt along on his way. He's not searching for a challenging fight or a treasure to be fund. He wishes to create strong and artistic weapons and armor solely for the purpose of increasing his own skills as blacksmith.
He mostly uses his weapons for himself, because he's often the only one who is able to use them to their full potential, but he occasionally gives one to a worthy warrior who he considers to be better fitted of wielding it. He's not particularly interested in the person he gives the weapon to, but seeing one of his weapon being used to its utmost limits makes him feel proud of his work.
Nevertheless, he is a killer. He won't kill for fun, but he will kill if it needs to be done in order to achieve his wishes, luckily this rarely includes other people, as he often only desires to travel the land and sea in search for materials or strong creatures.

Hello my son is very interested in buying this piece wondering if you were interested in selling it . If not he asked something about a bricklink list .

Well, that's interesting.
Sorry for the late response, I currently have a lot of work to do.
In order to calculate the price, I'd have to make a part list anyways.
In case this is a serious question, I'd be willing to do so, but it's a lot of work for this one, because it is my most complex work so far. Just the price for the parts themself will probably already be quite high.

Well, I have no idea how to count in feet, because here in germany we count in meter. But after googeling around, I'd say Byorak isn't that big ^^
Only one and a halve feet or two feet at most I'd say :)

This guy is ginormous! His arms put those on my fire lord (not uploaded yet) to shame.

I noticed when looking over the previous versions that his claw switched arms (right arm in ver. 1.0-3.0, changed to left ver. 3.2), was there any particular reason for this?

Nah, there's not really a particular reason :)

This is great. The most obvious improvement is in the photography, but the model itself is also bettered. I'd agree that the removal of the Ehlek parts are an improvement, and the sword is very cool; the hand he grasps it with is also an improvement over the previous iteration. The new legs look markedly better, especially from the back, where they looked weak before. And since I haven't commented on the previous Byorak, I'll just add that the Keelerak bodies as armor are a clever application of a hard-to-use piece. One thing that's hard to tell in this picture is if his neck looks better than the previous version, or if it's just the photography; although since the earlier pictures where the thinness of the neck looked odd were of mediocre quality, I suppose the real question is how the neck looks in person.

Maybe, I'm pretty satisfied with the neck. It didn't change from the previous version, you could be right that it's not really visible in these pictures, but definitely looked weird in the last pictures, I agree there.

But thanks for the other complements :)

This is easily my favorite version. Love the armor detail.

Unless if someone specifically looks a the right arm's position in comparison to the rest of the body it's a bit difficult to tell that it is bent. For the first few seconds even I thought it was straight; but now it seems in a strange position especially for this particular fighting stance.

I already thought about reworking the arms, so that's probably going to be a problem which I'll try to solve ^^

Well the arms themselves are alright. It's just the exact battle pose you have them in that is throwing everyone off.

Great improvements, Alex! The removal of the Ehlek pieces was a good move, and the proportions work much better. Your presentation also looks professional!
A minor suggestion about the posing: could Byorak's right arm be slightly bent in the main photo? Straight arms held out at that angle look unnatural to me. Everything else about the posing works greatly, though, and is framed very well.
I had fun hunting for the Bohrok-Kal shields =P At the risk of embarrassment, the Gahlok-Kal shields elude me...

The arm is bent at nearly 90 .-.
The perspective isn't really showing it I guess, the Keelerak Visorak shell is part of his right lower arm, because it works like a shield and thus doesn't bent together with the arm. That probably makes it look strange :o

Ah, the Gahlok-Kal shields are the hardest ones to find in these pictures, I just realized xD
You can see them in the upper right picture beneath the Rahkshi heads on the chest armor.
It's like 'Where's Wally?'  ^^

Oh, now I see what's going on - the elbow joint is twisted, so that the lower arm folds inwards, right? It's also confusing because it looks like the elbow joint should be below the Keelerak shell.

The flow within the back has taken some time and the blade scales have been improved with every version. I'm happy someone finally notices that work :)

I'd try to critique this if I thought I could. The shaping, the tight armoring, the color, the sheer aesthetic quality, no part of this MOC is lacking. Well done, sir!

Thanks, getting good critique from you is honoring ^^
I often read strict comments and critiques from you :)
Sadly, i'm not premium member so I can't activate critiques for my MOCs xD
Otherwise, I'd love to have a critique from you :D

At least having one MOC with this size which needs constant work and always has some way to improve is great to show my skill. I'm probably always going to try to improve him even further, the arms are probably next.

No problem, I'd assume that you've seen my comments on Dave's MOCs, and those are definately strict <:y

Forgive me, I should have been more clear with what I meant; I was merely saying that I would have provided a much longer and insightful comment if I thought I could come up with enough stuff to bitch about. This particular MOC was hard to criticize.

I was thinking that the arms were more of a stylistic choice, but if you were to rework them, could you think about making his arms a little more muscled? Being a backsmith would result in particularly large arms I'd think.

Oh, I understood what you meant ^^
Yeah, I saw your critiques for Aiden as well, you're one of the people who wouldn't just give him 5 stars in everything right away xD

That's pretty much one of my critique points as well.
The shape just isn't right, they still have some gaps compared to the rest of the body and they just don't look 'strong' enough.

Question: how poseable are Byorak's legs?
Reply
:iconalex-darkrai:
Alex-Darkrai Featured By Owner Sep 13, 2013  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
I thought the main picture would show exactly that :o
Pretty poseable! The knees can bend just a little bit more than 90, they're freely posable on the hip and the ankles can't bend sideways, but forward and backwards as much as I like (even to extends that don't look natural anymore).

Vedkarrtheunbroken Featured By Owner Sep 15, 2013  Student Traditional Artist
Not really, the pose isn't drastic enough to show off the full range of motion, are the hips aticulate enough to form a 90 angle with the torso? It seems like that particular joint may be hindered by the pelvic armor. (which seems to be very common now that I think about it)

Oh yeah, the hips can't bend THAT far. The armor hinders it.
But I'm okay with that.

The claw has always been a conceptional important part of the MOC, it's something special and I rarely do asymmetrical MOCs, so Byorak makes up for that xD
