Bionicle MOC - Grind Star by Alex-Darkrai Bionicle MOC - Grind Star by Alex-Darkrai
I have gotten used to it now. My pace with uploading MOCs is probably gonna stay like this. I'll hardly be able to get any faster while studying. But hey; I'm still on it!

The Creation/Creators Notes:
This was a long journey. I already had finished torso and head more than a year ago, but I took them apart again, because they were too much out of concept. After doing some different thing I started completely anew a few months ago and completed the new head and partly the torso and legs right away! It was great, because I finally found the right concept for him.

Firstly, I wanted to create a MOC purely for the battle.
In battle; there are characters and monsters.
Characters have reasons for fighting, skills which they have polished in order to put them to use and certain weeknesses which come along with their strenghs.
Monsters have near to never any reason, often only instincts, their skills are often meant purely for killing and have developed along with their body for their whole life, which essentially links their fightings skills and their body for their whole life. Or put it differently; characters can put down their weapons and forget about their self-thought skills and live a peaceful life afterwards, monsters can't do that most of the times, they're bound to live as a killer.
(That's just a diffinition I made for the origin of my MOC, don't take it as my opinion towards any related topic.)
Zero Star now has a special kind of choice, which he got through his transformation skills.
He can have a body which is purely made for fighting without having any regards of not being able go back to a normal existence. So he combined the deadliest skills and body characteristics he had absorbed so far, in order to reach this form.

Secondly, I myself wanted to combine characterstics of a few of my favorite sci-fi characters/monsters into this MOC! A little bit of the proportions of Samus Battle suit and a few features of the Predator and the Alien.
I was also slightly reminded of Scizor while completing the MOC.

I hope the pictures are okay to look at! I tried to get as much out of the black sections as I could, so you can differentiate the parts, but I wasn't as successful as I hoped.

Here's the pole/ranking/index of the Stars!

place/name/reference/percentage of voting/locomotion/technique
0. - Zero Star - Darkness - // - traveling through shadow - absorbing
1. - Deep Star - Takadox - // - swimming - drowning
2. - Ground Star - Carapar - // - running - crushing
3. - Bone Star/REVAMP  Pridak - 50% - climbing - knifing
4. - Virus Star - Ehlek - 29% - crawling - infecting
5. - Grind Star - Kalmah - 14% - digging - shredding
6. - // - Mantax - 7% - flying - shooting
∞. - Nova - Nameless Stranger - // - walking - forcing on suicide

I love the insectoid face and legs! They remind me of a fly and a grasshopper, respectively.

Gorgeous as always. The calves, shins and feet are my favourite parts, but I also love the general posture and shape of the moc. I could say a lot more...
Awesome job, looking forward to seeing the final in this series!

The hair and the shape look feminine, but you were probably going for and alien appearance. Pretty much everything's been said, so I'll just comment on how cool the hair looks :D Also I thought I'd just mention how your current pace with MOCs is great. No need to rush things.

Thanks! Nice to something about the hair, it was one of the first parts being build. I often start with torso or head, because those give my MOCs the most character, I think.

I really wanted to use two Kalmah heads for the MOC, but had no idea how to make NOT look like and octopus when using the parts symmetrical xD

Then I tried to array the parts one after another and it looked like long hair, so kept going with that idea :)

I really like the jagged texture you've used here, and the shaping at the shoulders and torso is sublime! The only qualm I have is that the knees look very empty when the legs are bent like in the top two photos, but it still looks great.

Being blown away right now. As with other people, I also thought this was a female at first glance. But at the same time I can see this being male. I love that you found a good use for those black and red saws, in the legs and paired with those Antroz wings. I do wonder why you put alternating colors on the toes, I feel that one color would have been fine. My favorite part is probably the head, I can't figure out it's build and I love it when I can't make heads or tails of something because of the complexity. Overall I'd say that this is an incredible moc with great shaping and color balance.

Ah yeah, I do feel similar about the feet, but I once had a discussion with Dave that I never seem to do asymmetrical feet, while real feet are in fact always asymmetrical. This was a little attempt to try something different. I also did it because the inner sides of the legs are asymetrically colored in the same way ^^

I have to say; the head is a prime example for 'using parts without any actual connection'. The parts between the eyes are only held there by the eye parts from both sides and pressure from the inner structure of the head itself. I don't know if you'd disapprove of such a technique, but I can assure you that the parts are stabile and not lose in any way. When using any technique, I also always pay attention to not bend or damage any of parts in any way that would fracture or destroy them. It's important for me to keep the parts useable, that's the way I prefer to MOC ^^

That's a viable technique when it comes to Mocing, one I've certainly tried to use before(to no avail). The only parts I've ever modified are parts that LEGO has actually instructed to cut before, the rigid flex tubing.  Other than that I make sure parts are re-usable as well.

Daaaamn, those good old ExoForce battle-mechs. I loved them, but I got like five of them. My friend has two sets, but they're bigger than my sets. I'd need two of the pieces, and it won't be so annoying to see that Venatrix has grey feathers instead of red 'n' black.
Thanks for the set info. I'll get working to acquire two of these bad boys. :d

Wow, I truly didn't know what to expect from you with this one Alex. I usually never do. You're like my favorite band Tool, you take your time, you can't be forced to do something you're not interested in, and you always come up with something that exceeds expectations.  There's really no point in trying to predict what's going to happen because like with Tool's albums each new venture is a departure from the last. However, there are still those signature qualities that make them who they are in each album, the same rings true for you and this MOC. Its so different, yet its so "Alex Darkrai."

As for the MOC itself, I find one of the things that make it so dynamic is its pose. The color scheme and use of the gradient parts lego has produced gives a very menacing effect. I've always wanted some of those black and Dark Red Keerahk blades, especially since they're definitely my favorite of all the Vahki blades, and probably even my favorite bionicle weapon piece of all time. They seriously look badass all by themselves. I've said it before I'll say it again, you Germans have the best selections of parts in your shops!  I can definitely see the influences here. I do kinda get a Seamus vibe from this. Grind Star made me think it was female oriented to. I guess I was thinking of like a female grinding on a person or somethin'. Guess we know where my mind's at.  This is definitely one of the stronger entries to your Star series, but I don't think its without any flaws.

Its actually kinda hard to tell some times with your MOCs. I can't say I like the upper arms all that much, they look a little lazy but maybe that's just the photos. Don't feel bad about the photography, predominantly black is one of the hardest color schemes to photograph to where all the parts make sense. You'd practically have to outline them really. I also think the knees look terribly thin relative to the rest of the MOC. Normally I'd attribute that to allowing mobility(like when I do it), but with the actuators(Lego really needs to make the cylinder parts in black) being there, I can't picture the knees bending all that much past a 90 degree angle so I think you might be able to beef up that area with some armoring or technic mass at least. You've got that free ball joint to work with to. I just wanna say that this advice is tentative on my understanding of the MOC.

Overall a wonderful addition to your series. Last up is the Mantax one right?

Thank you a lot!
Wow, comparing me to a successful band sounds big! xD
There are a lot of those gradient bionicle parts, but I did use all black-dark red colored bionicle parts which there are ^^
After comparing the finished Grind Star to his fellows, I noticed the same thing. Even my all time favorite Deep Star seemed ... misshaped compared to him xD
I'll have to revamp Bone Star and Nova at some point anyways. Bone Star crumbles too much and Nova has to many characteristics which need to be improved.
I'm not sure if the revamping has priority or the last Star with the Mantax reference.
The arms of my MOCs are often thin, because I prefer that thickness most of the times when it comes to the proportions. Zero Star has thin arms as well. I did actually plan to make at least one Star with thicker arms, like I gave Ground Star stronger legs.
Maybe I'm gonna do that with the Mantax Star, but I actually have a different design in mind for that one, but Maybe I combine the ideas xP
The knees ... having some more bending would be nice, mave I can remove the acuators if I strengthen the knees a little more, I'm gonna have to test that!
Thanks for the long comment, I still have to comment on so many MOCs, I've seen in the past few moths, I have no idea how to manage all that -.-"

We do still make a lot stuff, but in case you're excluding Hero Factory MOCs, then you're probably right. I do have many HF parts and I have done some HF-MOCs, but somehow those parts are just not fit for my building style. I just can't seem to find any use for them on most of my MOCs xD

Interesting that Samus was an inspiration, since when I saw the picture my first thought was "this looks like something Samus would kill." Definitely seeing the sci-fi monster elements there, very creepy. The top picture make it seem more unique than the bottom ones, since the raptor leg structure is more pronounced when he's not standing up straight. Jolly good show, m'boy. Enjoy sleeping with the knowledge that it's in your room.

Most of the time, I take a few action pictures to show how adjustable my MOCs are and a front-, side- and backview in normal stances for understanding purposes ^^

Oh there'll be no problem for me, I'm already back here at my moms house where I study, my MOCs & parts are kept where I live with my father, so I'll have no problems with any nightmares.

On another note; since a 'funny' nightmare in my childhood, I'm pretty much unable to have real nightmares. They just all turn out to a scenarios where I hunt down the monsters/murders who try to kill/hurt me. It's pretty funny :D

It's been a while since I've had a "monster" type nightmare; the last one I think was in 2009 and featured Makuta Teridax (MoL version). (I'd never found him frightening before, but when he's two stories tall and just ripped the roof off your house he's freaking terrifying.) More recently (past few years) my nightmares have been more along the lines of psychological torture; myself or loved ones dying of disease or old age, potential futures where I've messed up big, and then one that's just too painful to talk about. My subconscious apparently hates me.

That's nothing about an inner hate for yourself, it's more like you really care about these things, I believe. Enough that you subconsciously get afraid of losing them.
It just happens, because your mind has no way of 'being ready' for losing important things, because one would never actively think about how it would be if 'such things' would happen, because it is unralistic after all. So the fear slowly developes unconsciously.
At least that is how I have perceived it so far. I often had bad dreams (not real nightmares) about treading my best friend in bad manner or that he hates me, because I don't really have much time to spare for him anymore since I've started studying. So now I'm at least trying to meet him from time to time, ask him how he doing. We live in different cities now, which are pretty far apart.
From expirience I'd say; just don't take things too seriously, which doesn't mean to ignore things that trouble you. Just give every topic in your life a proper amount of attention without ignoring one or focussing on one completely.
That has worked great for me so far ^^

Nah, the comment about my subconscious hating me was meant as a joke. And of course I'm going to take things too seriously, thank you very much. ;) While I am trying to waste less time on trivial matters, heavy matters require heavy thought. That, and I'm planning on starting a philosophy blog. I'm sorry, I've warped this conversation from talking about your MOC to complaining about my neuroses. How terribly rude of me. Jagged razor armor is cool; if the MOC were female she could shave by crossing her legs.

It was originally a light novel. There is an anime based off of it. I don't know if there is a manga version, but there probably is. It was written by the author of Sword Art Online.
